Support vulnerable families in accessing basic and nutritious food.
Reduce food waste through the recovery and distribution of surplus products.
In Spain, more than 9 million people live at risk of poverty, struggling to access basic food and essential products. At the same time, millions of tons of food are wasted every year, food that could help alleviate this situation. Fundación Altius, with 25 years of experience fighting social exclusion through comprehensive support and job training programs, has developed a concrete response to this need through its food support area: the “1 Kilo de Ayuda” Market.
This program offers vulnerable families, referred by Social Services after an assessment of their socioeconomic situation, the possibility of collecting a weekly grocery basket adapted to the size of their household. The basket includes both fresh and non-perishable products, provided in a self-service format to preserve their dignity and autonomy.
To make this support possible, Fundación Altius coordinates regular donations from companies and organizations, and also manages a logistics network that collects daily surplus food from supermarkets and hospitality businesses. In this way, the program not only assists the families who need it most, but also helps reduce food waste by rescuing tons of food that would otherwise be lost.
Provide fresh food, non-perishable items, and hygiene products through a self-service format.
Collect daily donations from supermarkets and the hospitality sector.
Store and sort donated products.
Coordinate the donor network and logistics.
Organize and manage volunteers for support and logistical tasks.
The project supports vulnerable families, especially individuals facing long-term unemployment, single mothers, and households without support networks. In 2024, it provided direct assistance to 1,380 people through the distribution of 1,408,130 kg of food and other essential products, 75% of which were saved from food waste.
