Guarantee access to food and drinking water for the displaced population in the Lake Chad basin: Chad, Niger and Nigeria.
The Lake Chad conflict, caused by the expansion of the Boko Haram group and the military response, implies immense and unknown suffering for millions of people in one of the poorest regions of the world. 11 million people need urgent help, of which 7 million are at risk of famine, including 450,000 children suffering from malnutrition. It is a violent conflict that began seven years ago in north-eastern Nigeria, which has intensified in the last three years, spreading across the borders of Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
Insecurity prevents people from accessing basic social services and has destroyed infrastructure. This is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world at this time, and it takes place in one of the poorest and most fragile areas of the world. There have been alarming levels of sexual violence, violations of human rights and forced recruitment, including of young children. The security situation is still fragile, and violence continues to make it difficult for Oxfam and other agencies to distribute aid to the people who need it.
